Sanders Weathersby baskets a treasure

Many people from Crystal Springs own Weathersby baskets.  Gigi Sullivan, Elizabeth Jones Horn, Betty Frizzell, Robert Sims, Susan Thomas Ware, Kay Pevey – they all have baskets made by Sanders Weathersby, and most likely there are many more.

Weathersby was a third-generation basketmaker, having learned from his grandfather, Joe Weathersby, when he was eight years old.  His father, Keasie, also made baskets and sold them at Skinny Taylor’s store next to Grayson’s Feed & Seed (which is now where Big D’s restaurant is located).  Weathersby worked off and on for J. N. Mohon Trucking Firm until the early 70s.  After retiring he decided to make baskets full-time.

He worked on a special-order basis, working several hours a day.  He advertised by word-of-mouth and business remained steady.  He was involved in the process from start to finish.  All of his items were made from white oak.  He would cut the tree and then cut strips which he meticulously wove to make at least 20 varieties of baskets in multiple shapes, some with tops.  They sold anywhere from $5 to $30.  White oak is a light-colored wood which ages over time to a warm honey color.  He also wove chair backs and seats.

One day, Susan Thomas Ware, who owns some of his baskets, recalls seeing him sitting outside making a basket. She asked him if he could show her how to make them and he responded, “Naw, I don’t reckon so”.  It is a shame he did not teach others so that the art could live on.  However, this only makes his baskets more special.

Sanders was married to Ora Smith and they had six children, Robert Lee Weathersby, Dorothy Lee White, Ora Lee Weathersby, Sanders, Jr., Johnny K., and Mattie. Weathersby was born in 1914 and passed away in 1997.  His handmade marker is in the St. Paul Cemetery.

For those who own one of his baskets, they say they are as sturdy as the day they were purchased.  Many people knew Weathersby and are proud to own one of these treasures.  Do you own a Weathersby basket?  Visit the discussion on the Memories of Crystal Springs Facebook page to see how many do!
